Workshops

We welcome you to participate to three additional workshops organized during the conference.

Challenges and opportunities in building a Nordic – Baltic database on sustainable food systems

Facilitators: Silvia Gaiani, University of Helsinki, Ruralia Institute
Date: 27.5.2025
Time: 16:30-18:00
Place: Viikki Campus, A-building, Meeting Center, Tiimi A4

Building upon the necessity to urgently establish Nordic-Baltic sustainable food systems and taking inspiration from the FAO Food Systems Dashboard, the workshop will aim at exploring 1) what makes the Nordic and Baltic food systems unique in terms of structure and functioning 2)  Which indicators could be selected and adopted in order to measure sustainability in Nordic Baltic food systems?

The workshop will start with a presentation about the current status of food systems followed by a guided brainstorming session where ideas and inputs will be collected from the participants. Slido, a polling platform for mobile phones, will be used to run an effective and inclusive Q&A session.

Planetary Plate Puzzle: A serious game for deliberating sufficient future diets

Facilitators: Rachel Mazac, Stockholm Resilience Center; Kaisa Kurki, Lappeenranta University of Technology; Iryna Herzon, University of Helsinki
Date: 27.5.2025
Time: 16:30-18:00
Place: Viikki Campus, A-building, Meeting Center Hall

Join us for a hands-on session where we introduce The Planetary Plate Puzzle—a serious game designed to explore what ecologically and culturally sufficient diets might look like in Finland by the year 2050. The game centers on the concept of dietary sufficiency, aiming to reduce the carbon emissions and land use of the average Finnish diet to stay within planetary boundaries, while still being nutritious and culturally acceptable.

In this session, you’ll learn about the design, purpose, and rules of the game, and get the chance to play-test it as a deliberation tool. The Planetary Plate Puzzle was created to support open dialogue around dietary change—a topic that has become increasingly polarized, especially when it comes to culturally acceptable transitions. Serious gaming offers a way to foster respectful participation and co-creation within safe spaces, and this session invites you to experience and shape that process.

We welcome your feedback and reflections on both the game and the broader process, as we continue to develop serious gaming methods that encourage inclusive and constructive conversations about sustainable food futures.

Future research needs & activities for transdisciplinary food systems research

Facilitators of the parallel tracks
Date: 28.5.2025

In this workshop we deliberate future research needs and questions for transdisciplinary Nordic-Baltic food systems research. The workshop starts with the panel discussion, where research needs identified in the thematic tracks are discussed together with the facilitators of the sessions. The research needs are worked further in thematic groups in a World Café style. We welcome you also to initiate ideas and discuss networking activities for the strengthening of collaboration in Nordic-Baltic transdisciplinary food systems research.
