NORDIC-BALTIC Research Network on Organic Food and Farming

Coordinator: Johanna Spångberg, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences,

A lot of projects and research on organic food and farming are focusing on more central and southern parts of the EU. The Nordic-Baltic countries are situated in similar climate conditions, have many cultural similarities, and therefore also share many prerequisites for organic production and consumption. This makes it interesting to collaborate regionally and share research ideas and results. Both to improve future research and to not duplicate research conducted in the countries, as well as to identify common research needs to collaborate on. Research institutions working with the coordination of organic food and farming research in the Nordic-Baltic countries, have a long history of cooperation. In this project the network will arrange a scientific in-person conference directed towards the Nordic-Baltic organic research, and relevant stakeholder, community.

Need for meeting places
There is also a generation shift currently taking place in the scientific community working with organic food and farming in most of the involved countries. This urges for a meeting place where senior and junior researchers can share experiences and younger researchers can get inspired from the knowledge that the senior researchers have acquired. Organic food and farming have a holistic and interdisciplinary approach including many subject areas and have a research community that is scattered between many disciplines which also makes it important to find a common platform for interaction.

The aim
The aim of the conference is to share and discuss recent research outcomes within organic food and farming and its societal interactions. All researchers, advisors, teachers, policymakers and other stakeholders with an interest in organic farming, food and other innovative organic products are welcome to be part of the network and to attend the conference.

The conference is planned to take place in June 2026.
