The Nordic Alternative Protein Knowledge and Innovation Network (NAPKIN) fosters collaboration across Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden to accelerate sustainable protein innovation. While the Nordic region leads in plant-based, fermentation, and algae-based solutions, the sector remains fragmented. NAPKIN connects research institutions, industry, and policymakers to drive advances in plant, cellular agriculture, and hybrid protein technologies.

Through workshops, knowledge exchange, and a PhD training program, NAPKIN will identify research gaps, engage the public, and develop policy recommendations. By leveraging Nordic resources and expertise, the network aims to enhance food security, sustainability, and economic growth.
Coordinated by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, NAPKIN partners with Aarhus University (Denmark), Lund University (Sweden), Matís (Iceland), and Nofima (Norway).
Funded by NKJ as part of its 60-year anniversary in 2025, this initiative promotes Nordic and transdisciplinary collaboration.
In spring 2027, NAPKIN will host a flagship international conference in Helsinki to showcase key findings and strengthen global partnerships.
